Garden Sprinkler Kit

Best way to plant grass for these conditions?
My mom and I are soon going to be having to plant some grass in our backyard in this one big area, not the whole yard. But I want to find out more info so here is some info first then the questions.
The area has a now unused sprinkler system so we can’t dig too deep in areas, there is well not sure what its called but i was raking the area gently and it looks like clumps of dead grass as well as some roots from an old long gone tree. I am not sure what the PHb is and the area gets a lot of sunlight from morning to late afternoon in the summer.. soo
What kind of grass would best to plant. Should we try a home phb test kit or take a few samples to a local lawn and garden place and see if they can test? Also do we deal with weeds before planting the seed? Lastly should we use an airater?
I’ve planted grass by raking about 1/2 ” and then spreed seeds and covering it with straw and water morning and evening. I took 4 weeks just to start growing and then I had to clean up the straw.
This year I had to do about 700 sq ft of my lawn and I use the Scotts PatchMaster and it was green in 10days.
You do need to break the ground 2-3″ in depth so find out how deep the sprinkler lines are ,usually they are 6″ deep and do by hand around the sprinkler head. I use the small tiler.
Take a rake and take out the weeds & their roots out of the loose dirt. If you spray you will have to wait a few weeks for them to die and not sure but will take3-4 before you can plant seeds in the treated area.
Spreed the PatchMaster out about 1/2″ thick a bag covers 300sq ft for about $23.00 and water morning and evening (keep it wet) Make sure you wear a mark or something over your mouth & nose.
It has been 4 week sense I planted mine and you can even tell that it was bare ground from the street and it keeps getting thicker I’ve had to cut it twice now and I cut at 3″.
